2003 NFL draft pick by pick: #5 Terence Newman

It seems that CB Terrence Newman has the distinction of being the third home run draft pick of the 2003 draft. When Bill Parcells was running the Dallas Cowboys he considered him to be the finest athlete on the roster and after making the 2008 Pro Bowl his status as a shut down corner is assured.

2002 was Newman’s senior season at Kansas State. That year he was the Big 12 defensive player of the year, the Jim Thorpe Award winner as the best defensive back, and a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the best collegiate defensive player.

In his rookie year Newman played all 16 games and recorded 66 tackles and four interceptions. Since then he has not slowed down, in fact he averages 52 tackles and just about three interceptions a year.

The Cowboys were so sold on his talents that before the 2008 season they signed him to a six year extension for 50.2 million dollars with 22.5 million of that guaranteed.

With all of that in mind we must give this pick by the Dallas Cowboys a six year grade of A+.
