It was the topic of dinner conversations across the country Thursday. A 20-year-old trapped inside a toddler's body appeared on the TV talk show, "Katie," Friday as part of a show focused on medical mysteries. In Huntsville, the show airs at 3 p.m. weekdays on WAAY-TV.
Brooke Greenberg, who is 20 years old, still has the body and mind of a toddler. The family shared their experience with talk show host Katie Couric, stunning in-studio and TV audiences nationwide.
Brooke has been 16 pounds, 20 inches for the past 15 years. Doctors say that this case is the only known one of its kind in the world. That offers little help to Brooke's family and 17-year-old sister.
“From age one to four, Brooke changed. She got a little bit bigger,” explained her father, Howard, during the show. “But age four, four to five, she stopped.”
While the family does not know the root of Greenberg's apparent inability to age, scientists are trying to help. Eric Schadt, a researcher with Mount Sinai, has been studying her genome. Schadt and his team are trying to determine the root of Greenberg's disorder. Her genome could also yield clues about the aging process.
