20-year-old toddler: Doctors term woman's condition as Syndrome X

A 20-year-old toddler may sound impossible, but it's a reality for one adult. Doctors are baffled when it comes to a woman by the name of Brooke Greenberg from Maryland, Daily Mail reports Jan. 10.

Brooke still has the physical characteristics of a toddler. She still has her baby teeth, can't talk, and still travels in a stroller. Her mental and cognitive abilities are evaluated at that of a nine-month old child. Despite her increase in age, her body hasn't grown past that stage. Doctors have termed her condition as Syndrome X.

The 20-year-old began growing very young, but then stopped at about age four or five. She's been examined by some of the best doctors in the most prestigious medical facilities, but no one has come up with a diagnosis for the mysterious condition. A New York doctor said her endocrine and chromosome tests have shown no abnormalities.

For 15 years, Brooke has been trapped inside a toddler's body. She requires 24-hour care from her parents for feeding and giving medicine.

Tests reveal that Brooke may have been born with a genome mutation, which switches off the body's ability to mature. More will be explored in her medical condition that doctors have yet to fully identify. If they can learn what the 20-year-old's true diagnosis is with her genes, the goal would be to attempt manipulating them to see if they play a role by increasing longevity or reducing age-related disorders, such a Alzheimer's.
