A heartbreaking story out of New York City involves a 2-year-old girl who was at a family barbecue over the holiday weekend. Apparently, the toddler wandered away from her family. After five hours of intense searching for the little girl, she was found to have drowned in the city park’s lake, according to ABC News on Sunday.

The girl, Ruhshona Kurbonova, was pulled from the lake by New York Police Department divers. The lake, specifically, was in Prospect Park where the incident occurred on Saturday evening. The medical examiner’s office in New York has ruled that the young girl’s death was an accidental drowning.

According to a statement released by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams in New York, no parent should ever have to bury a child. He called her death tragic and he urged adults to keep a cautious watch over children while participating in summer activities. He said that we all have a part to play in promoting safe play conditions.

The family of Ruhshona Kurbonova reportedly emigrated from Uzbekistan. On Saturday, the family was grilling kabobs. According to the girl’s uncle, Dekzod Isokov, that is when the 2-year-old child and a preschool-aged boy who is related to her got away, according to a New York Post report. He said that the two children walked off and none of the adult family members knew that they had walked off. The boy involved in the incident was found in bushes and woods near the lake where the girl’s body was found. The boy was totally wet but safe, according to a Huffington Post report.

Police authorities searched the 585-acre park by bicycles and helicopters. They also searched underwater for the girl before the sad discovery. Persons who were attending the barbecue at the park also helped as possible in the search for the girl.
