Crystal Lake resident David Wilcox has been in the U.S. Army for 10 years and started taking boxing lessons a month ago with the hopes of competing in the Chicago Golden Gloves in March.
The 29-year-old staff sergeant in the Engineer Corps spent two tours in Iraq. His war-zone duties included building asphalt roads in that shell-pocked country.
A native of West Virginia, Wilcox lives in Crystal Lake with his wife and two small sons. Recruiting duty brought him to town.
Wilcox said he wanted to box for a long time and fight in the Golden Gloves. He said it was a stroke of luck that the Army Recruiting office he is assigned to is just blocks from the School of Hard Knocks Boxing Academy in Crystal Lake.
He said that a boxer's workout has helped him maintain his fitness.
"An Army workout is push-ups, sit-ups and a 2-mile run," Wilcox said. "A boxer's workout requires more stamina. I mean, try jumping rope for 20 minutes. It's tough.
"And when you're in the ring, someone else is dictating the pace of your workout and that's tougher to do, too."
