A 12-year-old gunman in the seventh grade opened fire inside his Roswell, N.M. middle school on the morning of Jan. 14, critically injuring a 14-year-old male student who he shot twice in the face, and a 13-year-old girl, shot in the arm, who was admitted to the hospital in serious condition.

Yahoo! News reported that the 14-year-old boy that was shot was the young gunman’s target.

In a statement released by N.M. Governor Susana Martinez, a teacher walked up to the young shooter and “asked him to put down his shotgun,” which he did – after firing one additional shot up into the air.

Police in Roswell reported that Berrendo Middle School was placed on lockdown and that the 12-year-old shooter was apprehended. Students were bused to the nearby Roswell mall, where parents were able to pick up their children.

Prayer services have already been scheduled for tonight at the Calvary Baptist and First Baptist churches in Roswell.

Pastor Chris Mullennix said that the prayer services will be able to help the community come together and begin the healing process.

"This is something that strikes people to the core," Mullennix said .

"We're not talking about a flesh wound or just a mental wound, we're talking about the very souls of people being shaken and rocked by something like this."

Eighth grader Odiee Carranza said she witnessed the shooter remove his gun from a band instrument case in the school gym; and then he shot the young boy and girl.

Carranza described the shooter as a "smart kid and a nice kid."
