TROY, NY -- Oh, those out-of-towners.
Treviso by Mallozzi's, the restaurant at the Italian-American Community Center in Albany, took top honors from the five-judge panel at the 6th annual Troy Chowder Fest on Saturday, repeating its 2010 performance.
Treviso's "Autumn Pear Chowder" was the winner, a sweet and salty concoction using bacon, sausage, root vegetables, cream and chicken stock as well as pears.
Second place went to Kingsway Community Center's "Ribeye Steakhouse Chowder," and third to Albany Pump Station's "Southwest Andouille Chowder." (Dept. of Full Disclosure: I again was one of the judges.)
In the People's Choice arena, Albany Pump Station successfully defended its 2010 title with its "Southwest Andouille Chowder."
Other awards:
Most Original -- Dinosaur Bar-B-Que's "Corned Beef Reuben Chowder."
Best Vegetarian -- Browdway Brew's "Corn Chowder."
Best Seafood -- Illium Café's "Creole Shrimp, Lobster and Corn Chowder."
The sellout event was held this year in the Marina District along the Hudson River instead of on River Street. Attendees paid $1 per tasting ticket.
Some of the proceds of the event will go to the Troy Boys & Girls Club which has its own standalone fundraiser coming up next Tuesday (October 25). It's the 4th annual "Pizzapalooza," and will be held at the Franklin Terrace Ballroom, 126 Campbell Avenue in Troy, near Hudson Valley Community College.
