2 major storms hit world: Super Bowl XLVI, Europe's worst snow storm in decades

As Eli Manning led the New York Giants to a 21-17 Super Bowl XLVI win against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, Europe was experiencing one of its worst snow storms since 1986.

The two storms--Manning’s second Super Bowl MVP award (as well as the Giants’ second Super Bowl title) and Eastern Europe’s white blizzard that’s killed 300 people thus far (and left 70,000 cut off from help in Serbia)--has definitely blanketed the global landscape this weekend.

Yet the Giants Sunday night storm across 128 countries’ television sets spanned mere hours, whereas the winter storm abroad has been going on for days, even reaching the northernmost part of Africa.

The Philadelphia Inquirer, which covered the football storm in the U.S., quoted Giants quarterback Eli Manning as saying that as of Super Bowl Sunday, the NY Giants can now boast that,

The Kuwait Times reported that the real champions are those who are making every effort to aid the dying homeless and stranded in London, Rome, Poland, France and Serbia, where it is the police who are having to provide the basic necessities of life.

According to a Heathrow spokeswoman, 30 percent of Saturday flights were cancelled and the airlines had to warn passengers that they should “contact their airlines before they travel.”

For those Super Bowl fans who traveled from outside the country, there is a great likelihood that they may get a little more of the U.S. than they had anticipated, with Italy having to send out as many as 400 of their armed forces personnel to tackle the greatest snow fall in more than two decades, according to the Kuwait Times.
