A 22-year-old male suspect is in custody after a fatal shooting Monday night in Sacramento’s Old Town.
According to a Sacramento police news release at approximately 9:38 p.m., Sacramento police officers responded to the sounds of gunshots in the 1000 block of 2nd Street. Officers arrived to find five people shot, two were pronounced dead at the scene.
Apparently an argument erupted inside Sports Corner Café at 2nd and K streets, escalating into a bar room brawl. During the fight the suspect fired several rounds at a 30-year-old female, a 35-year-old male and an employee. The female victim sustained a gunshot wound to her lower body, but the male victim and the employee, did not survive the multiple gunshot wounds. Both died at the scene.
An armed security guard that was near a side door heard the gunshots and confronted the suspect inside the bar, where gunfire was exchanged. Both the suspect and security guard sustained wounds from the exchange.
The armed suspect ran from the bar toward crowded city streets and was eventually taken into custody by police. The identity of the suspect is being withheld while investigation continued.
Two guns were recovered at the scene. No further information is available at this time.
Due to the shooting the annual New Year’s fireworks show was canceled.
