Two girls are arrested after a 12-year-old girl’s suicide is deemed the direct result of being bullied online. Rebecca Sedwick was so despondent from this bullying that she climbed a water tower at an abandoned concrete plant and jumped to her death, alone and desperate, according to the Christian Science Monitor on Oct. 15.
The girls arrested are only 12 and 14, but they’ve have been charged with felony aggravated stalking, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. As many as 15 girls ganged up on this young girl and “terrorized” her for months through online message boards and text messages.
Some of the girls cellphones and computers were seized during the investigation. This Winter Haven, Florida case is one to leave a pit in your stomach when you think of this poor young girl flinging herself off an abandoned tower because of the alleged pressures these girls put upon her.
The bullying started over a “boyfriend” issue and this in-turn caused Rebecca to become depressed. After Rebecca’s suicide, investigators looked at her computer and found queries such as “how to get blades out of razors” and “how many over-the-counter drugs do you take to die.” Rebecca had a screensaver that was a picture of her resting her head on a railroad track.
It could be difficult to connect a suicide with bullying, but the facts are there, these girls terrorized Rebecca for months. There is no word on any of the other girls being charged as of yet.
