When it's hot, grabbing a smoothie for lunch just feels better than a sandwich. They're cool, hydrating and, if you're lucky, loaded with nutrients. But commercial smoothies and even simple juices can be loaded with calories and pretty expensive.

Here are some drink ideas from the folks at NutriBullet. The company calls them NutriBlasts because they're full of whole fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and even herbs. And since you're making the NutriBlasts at home, you can control what goes into them.

Don't try these in a regular blender -- you need something powerful enough to smoothly process the leafy greens, ginger chunks, ice and seeds. In a low-power blender, you'll end up with a lumpy, unappetizing mess.

Check out these drink ideas that would make a great summer snack:

Ginger Pineapple Limeade Blast
This NutriBlast has an immune-boosting kick of vitamin C and a chunk of ginger to stoke the flames of your metabolism. And don't worry about adding spinach if you've never done it before -- spinach is one of those leafy greens that disappears into drinks.

  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • 1/2 cup pineapple
  • 1 chunk ginger
  • 3/4 cup lime juice
  • 6 leaves cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • Water to max line
  • Ice cubes

Add all ingredients to NutriBullet tall cup and extract until smooth.

Summer Sipper
This NutriBlast combines leafy greens with berries, cherries, melon and chia seeds with hydrating coconut water.

  • 1/4 tall cup arugula
  • 1/4 tall cup romaine
  • 2 leaves basil
  • 1/2 cup cantaloupe
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1 cup pitted cherries
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • Coconut water to max line

Add all ingredients to NutriBullet tall cup and extract until smooth.
