Two of the victims from Thursday’s shooting at Fort Hood in Texas were from Utah; one soldier is dead and the other is in the hospital. Aaron Thomas Nemelka died at the scene, and was from West Jordan, Utah. The family is in shock because they don’t understand how something like this could happen on a military base.
Aaron Thomas Nemelka, 19 grew up in West Jordan, and graduated in 2008 from West Jordan High School. He was stationed at Fort Hood and preparing to go to either to Iraq or Afghanistan; his job is to diffuse mines, and had been training for that mission. This would have been his first overseas deployment.
Another of the soldiers injured yesterday in the Fort Hood shootings is from Ogden, Utah. Joey Foster, 21, was shot in the hip. Foster’s mother, Aggie Foster was working at the Ogden Regional Medical Center when she received a phone call from her daughter-in-law that her son had been shot.
Aggie Foster said that she was in shock that something like this happened on a military base.
Joey Foster was 20 feet away from the gunman, when he stood up and screamed something in Arabic and pulled out the gun and started shooting people. Joey Foster was shot in the hip and needs to have surgery to remove the bullet.
Malik Nadal Hasan is the man accused of the shootings and he is in stable condition after being shot several times by military police. Hasan, 39 recently received orders to deploy to Afghanistan, and is a psychiatrist at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood. He is a US citizen of Jordanian descent, was born in Virginia and has never been deployed outside the US.
In the surveillance video shown below is Malik Nadal Hasan getting coffee the morning before the shootings at 6:20 am. The store owner said that the only thing out of the ordinary was that he said he was being deployed to Afghanistan and he was worried about it.
