2 dead in police standoff: Los Angeles, Watts gunman standoff leaves two dead

Los Angeles: 2 dead in police standoff. A report posted this morning at CBS News says two people are dead in a police standoff between a gunman in Watts, and Los Angeles police officers. According to police, the gunman killed another man, opened fire on police, then "holed himself up in a Watts home with three children inside before shooting himself."

At about 3 a.m this Friday morning the standoff began, reportedly as a domestic dispute, but escalated when the gunman shot a man in a truck outside of his residence. The man later died from his wounds.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the shooter opened fire on them, but no one was hit. After a two-hour confrontation with authorities, two children, ages eight and three, came out of the home and said their parents were dead. SWAT officers entered the home to find the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities say a woman, who they believe is the wife of the gunman, was wounded and taken to a local hospital in moribund condition. Sources say her condition was so grave, she was initially believed to be deceased.

Deputy Chief Robert Green said their was another small child, around one-year-old, in the home as well. All three of the children are safe, and no officers were injured during the incident.
