Spring has come. Many couples are getting married in this season. People who are engaged in floral design business by running their own floral shop or working as a floral designer will be spending busy time for offering wedding floral decorations. As a flower arranging instructor, I have been teaching uncountable number of students who would like to earn practical skills of wedding flower arrangements since 1990 in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley (San Jose).
Through this experience I found many students wanted to learn wedding flower arrangements before they earned basic skills of European (or American) floral designs. This is not the way it should be because everything starts from earning basic skills without which it is next to impossible to earn a higher level of skills required for business oriented arrangements such as wedding floral decorations.
If students have no previous experiences in flower arranging, they are highly recommended to start from a basic course in order to earn important fundamental skills. For those who already learned and earned reasonable floral design skills, it MAY be OK to skip the process of learning basic skills.
To my best knowledge and belief, no matter which school they join or from which instructor they learn wedding floral arrangements, it is mandatory for students to earn decent basic skills of floral decoration before starting to learn wedding flowers. In this sense it is not a good idea to skip a basic course. Minimizing the budget for flower arranging classes in an extreme way often hurts students, which they should clearly understand.
The above mentioned appropriate way of approach is needed for learning wedding flowers and funeral decorations as well as intending to proceed to the higher level of programs such as Intermediate and Advanced Course. Once they have earned a decent skill of basic floral arrangements, this will greatly help them earn even a higher level of skills and have greater opportunities of learning various floral designs.
Take the standard curriculum of our floral design school for instance, students are not supposed to skip Fresh Flower Arrangement Elementary Course in order to sign up for Wedding Party Arrangement Basic Course UNLESS they have decent experiences in floral design business or educational background relating to flower arrangements enough to skip the said elementary course.
Once I had bitter experiences of having a very hard time to teach wedding floral decorations to students who did not have reasonable experiences in floral arrangements. Both students and instructors did have lots of difficulties during lessons only because students lacked basic knowledge and techniques in making basic designs.
