Two men have been charged in the murder of a 9-month-old boy who was shot multiple times inside his DeKalb County home.
Marco Watson, 36, and Devin Thomas, 18, were charged Wednesday with murder and three counts of aggravated assault in the deadly home invasion that happened last month, according to DeKalb County police.
The two were arrested on unrelated charges and were in the DeKalb County jail when police added the new charges Wednesday night, police spokesman Capt. Steven Fore said. Watson was arrested on June 2 for probation violation and Thomas was arrested on May 12 for giving false statement to police, Fore said.
Both men were allegedly part of a group of armed, masked men who kicked through the front door of the To Lani Farm Road home where Kendarious Edwards was with his mother, grandmother and a family friend, the spokesman said.
One of women reportedly grabbed the baby and all three ran upstairs where they tried to lock themselves into a bathroom, according to media report. But the gunmen kicked it in and fired at them multiple times, striking the infant several times.
Police said the home invasion was part of a deadly crime spree that began on May 3, when Michael Phillips, 29, was fatally shot at a house party.
A week later 19-year-old Alexis Malone, who reportedly witnessed Phillips’ murder, was found dead, police said. Two people have since been charged with killing her and police have said the ones who shot the 9-month-old may have done it in retaliation for Malone’s murder.
Fore said Thomas knew Malone. He declined to comment on which of the suspects arrested was the actual shooter, but he said both were allegedly present that night Kendarious was killed.
