A few local Div. III athletes are riding high this week after being recognized for outstanding play last week.
Leading the way are field hockey All-Americans Megan Comunale and and Maura Campbell from Catholic University. Both were honored by Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association earlier this week. Comunale made first team, and Campbell is second team. With the addition of Comunale and Campbell, CU now boasts 10 All-Americans since 2001.
Comunale amassed 60 saves, 11 wins and six losses in 20 starts. Nationally, she is ranked No. 1 in goals against average and No. 5 in save percentage. She was named First Team All-Region.
Campbell, who scored two consecutive game winning goals during the Cardinals’ NCAA run, led the squad in assists (7), tied for second with points (17), second in shots (61) and tied for first in game winning goals (4) in her 21 starts while appearing and starting in all 21 games.
The All-American pair are also two-time Landmark Fall Academic Honor Roll selections.
Surprise, surprise, Marymount’s Katelyn Fischer was named the Capital Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Saints to a pair of road wins.
Opening the week with an 84-70 win at Southern Virginia, Fischer led the Saints (3-2) with her second-straight double-double, scoring a game-high 19 points to go with 10 assists. In a win at Virginia Wesleyan, Fischer led all scorers with 27 points while adding seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. She moved into 10th place in the Marymount all-time career scoring list with 1,336. Fischer is on pace to finish her career third all-time in scoring at MU.
