2 campgrounds and a butterfly show this winter near Bend Oregon

If you enjoy being out of the city in Winter, there are two campgrounds available year-round just a few miles from Bend, Oregon. Tumalo and LaPine are both open throughout the year and rates are lower in Winter. Another exciting development is that they now have 2 pet-friendly yurts at both of these locations. You can call 1-800-452-5687 to make a reservation for these pet-friendly sites.

Nearby you can ski or snowboard at Mt. Bachelor. This is a very popular destination with its dry, powder snow and numerous lifts. It gets cold there though, so bundle up.

Nearby, the High Desert Museum is hosting a hummingbird and butterfly show through April 7th. If you have several days, or just don't ski, you could spend one or two of them here and enjoy even more of nature's beauty. Imagine yourself, midwinter, standing in the midst of live butterflies and hummingbirds flying and fluttering past you. Click here and scroll to bottom of page for a one minute movie of the exhibit.

To get to the High Desert Museum, Mapquest recommends taking I-5 South to Salem, then taking the exit for Hwy 22 East toward Detroit Lake, for 80 miles, then Hwy 22 becomes Hwy 20 for another 46 miles. Then, merge onto US 97 toward Mt. Bachelor and go 7.9 miles to the museum. Of course the other way to get to Bend is to go over Mt. Hood on Hwy 26 for 103 miles, then get on Hwy 97 for an additional 47 miles. It might be a good idea to check road conditions, even if you drive in the snow on a regular basis.
