Fox's decision to put a fair bit of distance between the first Percy Jackson film and the sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, may turn out to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, all of the principle stars have gone on to bigger and better things: Logan Lerman has starred in The Perks of Being a Wallflower; Alexandra Daddario led Texas Chainsaw 3D; and Brandon T. Jackson's working with Eddie Murphy on a Beverly Hills Cop TV series. But the mythology-based franchise didn't get off to the strongest start, and audiences may have simply moved on.
USA Today has the first images from the sequel, which has the titular son of Poseidon on a journey to find the legendary Golden Fleece, the only thing that can save his home. One of the new additions to the expanded cast is Stanley Tucci, seen in one of these photos in his role as Mr. D aka Dionysus the god of wine.
Directed by Diary of a Wimpy Kid's Thor Freudenthal and co-starring Nathan Fillion, Douglas Smith, Missi Pyle, and Yvette Nicole Brown, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opens in 3D on August 16th. Look out for the first trailer when it hits next week.
