This lovely 1960 Pontiac Bonneville Sport Coupe was parked at the Mid Week Get Together last Wednesday night in Santa Clara. The Bonneville was the top of the line Pontiac for 1960, and featured Pontiac’s unique “Wide-Track” suspension, as well as the legendary 389 V-8 engine, both introduced in 1959. The 389 came with a 4-barrel carburetor as standard, with 3-2 barrel “Tri-Power” carburetion optional. Most came equipped with a 4-speed hydramatic automatic transmission, but a 3-speed manual was standard, and a 4-speed manual was optional, but is rare today. Clean styling features included a shark-nose grill, and a limited amount exterior trim and moldings. The 1960 Pontiacs were a departure from the over -the- top chrome laden 1958 model, and the twin-fin, flashy 1959 Bonneville. The interior, however is a flashy chrome and tri-toned color extravaganza. Pontiac called the upholstery material “Morokide”. The dash has real wood veneer trim, adding a touch of luxury.
This particular Bonneville is well preserved, and correctly restored. Sporting optional deluxe wheel covers, and rare "Cool-Pack" under-dash A/C. Exceptionally clean underneath, as it is on top, it is finished in “Magic-Mirror” Shelltone White with a Skymist Blue metallic roof. High-style and high-performance, Bonnevilles were popular cars when new, and are sought after by collectors today. Looking at this car, it is easy to see why.
