Today, January 6th, 2013 marks the premiere of Downton Abbey, the 2011 Golden Globe Award winner for Best Miniseries or Television Film. Tonight at 8pm Arizona time, viewers get to see this PBS British miniseries enter a new decade full of political and social changes, but we can also expect changes in fashion. As Downton Abbey enters the 1920’s which is known for radical changes in length of hemlines and looser fitting clothing, it is no wonder that the remake of The Great Gatsby featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carrey Mulligan is debuting later this year.
2013 will be the year of 1920’s revival fashion, during that decade there was a mixture of old traditions of the Gibson Girl and the Zeitgeist of the Jazz Age. The era was known for carefree styles and this year we will see a lot of simple elegance, but also some fun styles with the use of fringe. A common misconception of the 1920’s is that the era was all about flapper fashion and the rebelliousness of women, but there was a differentiating style among the “upper class.”
The upscale fashions consisted of using light chiffons and organza that was intricately beaded for that extra touch of sophistication. The upper class fashions were also a little more modest when it came to hemlines. Some women did not dare go above the calf length hemline like those rebellious flapper women.
This year when you put together your looks add some pieces representative of the 1920’s.
Hair Accessories: Dress up your hair with some marabou feathered hair clips with hints of pearls and rhinestones or a elegant beaded headband.
Jewelry: Try wearing elegant pearls as a necklace or a bracelet. The more layers of pearls the better.
Clothing Accessories: Add a vintage brooch to your blouse or scarf.
Clothing: If you go shopping and you want to stay on trend, try some drop waist styles in a flowing chiffon fabric. If you are lucky enough to find a chiffon dress with an triangular hemlines, you are definitely following the 1920’s era trends.
