As an amateur, So Yeon Ryu won gold medals for Korea in golf in both the team and individual events at the Asian Games in 2006 in Doha, Qatar. When she was 17, So Yeon Ryu turned professional and played on both the American Cactus Tour and the LPGA Korea Tour, winning events on both tours, including six wins on the Korean Tour.
On July 11, 2011, So Yeon Ryu scored the biggest win of her young career when she won the U.S. Women's Open (a major in women's golf) in a playoff over fellow Korean player Hee Kyung Seo. In 2012, So Yeon Ryu won for the second time on the LPGA Tour when she captured the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic (now Marathon Classic).
In addition to her second win, So Yeon Ryu made 23 of 24 cuts in 2012, and earned $1.283 million on the LPGA Tour. In 2013, So Yeon Ryu also made 23 of 24 cuts and earned another $1.279 million.
On August 24, 2014, So Yeon Ryu captured her third win on the LPGA Tour when she won the Canadian Pacific Women's Open. The win pushed So Yeon Ryu's earnings for 2014 over the $1 million mark, and her career earnings to well over $3.6 million.
