18/365 A Year of Places in Photography-Butterfly Fleet Mural

One of the most beautiful and fascinating pieces of marine history here in Astoria is the Butterfly Fleet. Men and women who came across the seas and across land to the Americas, followed a dream of coming to the Pacific Northwest where they hope to reap the bouny of the Northern Pacific and the Columbia River. As these men and women sought to build a thriving fishing culture here catching the silver-sided Pacific Salmon, they also built what has been called the Butterfly Fleet. If you were to drive past WAUNA Federal Credit Union's building, you would see this mural depicting the beautiful butterfly boats that were used in the Scandanavian fishing culture of the late 19th and early-20th Century.
