17th Annual Gingerbread Village kicks off the holidays, helps Assistance League

Gingerbread Village is an event that captures the "sweetness" of the holidays at Beech Activity Center, 9710 E. Central, and is a major fund raiser for the the Assistance League of Wichita.

A preview party will be held Thurs., Nov. 10 with an evening of food, spirits, music and entertainment. As with many a charity event, there will be an acution and a preview of the beautiful collection of gingerbread houses created for the event. Tickets for this special evening are $85. Call 316-687-6107 to reserve your tickets.

From Nov. 11  through 13, Gingerbread Village is open to the public. Visitors will view original gingerbread houses, create their own take-home house, and shop for home-made goodies at the bake shop. The Village will be open: Friday, 1 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 12:30 to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $7.50 at the door, $6 in advance. Children three and under are free. Advance sale tickets may be purchased at the Assistance League Thrift Shop, 2611 E. The holiday fun continues at the life-size Gingerbread House at the Cambridge Market which will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 19 and Dec. 10. Children are invited to have their pictures taken with Santa Claus and the life-size Gingerbread Boy. Yummy gingerbread boy cookies will be available for purchase.

Not only is this an event that helps get you in the holiday spirit with a dash of childhood memories, you're contributing to the work of the Assistance League of Wichita, which helps the community in many ways:

  • Operation School Bell®provides new school clothing, back packs and grooming kits to USD 259 students referred by school social workers.
  • Scholarships pay for all fees and supplies associated with completing a vocational degree at Wichita Area Technical College or Butler Community College.
  • Assault Survivor Kits provide new clothing and toiletry items to sexual assault victims through the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center.
  • Bear-Hugs provide teddy bears, clothing and tote bags to sexually abused children upon entry into the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner/Sexual Assault Response Recovery Team program at Via Christi-St. Joseph.
