17 candles just for you, Carla Lou!

What do most people accomplish by the time they're 17 years old? A driver's license? Maybe a walk down the aisle to receive a high school diploma?

Carla Lou isn't the typical 17 year old. Her time on earth has been a mix of pain and prize. She's overcome starvation, battled cancer, and fought back from temporary blindness. Algebra hasn't been a main concern, but she's an avid educator.

Carla Lou is a pit bull...but not just any pit bull. This elderbull is the co-founder of one of the most well known pit advocacy groups in the nation, Philadelphia based Pinups for Pitbulls.

Burlesque for a cause, the Pinups girls sell calenders, promote events, fund raise, and rescue pit bulls with the help of various organizations throughout the U.S., including Animal Planet's Pit Boss, Shorty Rossi, and the Animal Farm Foundation!

And it's safe to say that none of this would exist if it weren't for Carla Lou. Rescued from a basement in Texas, Carla's early life wasn't easy. She was discovered as an emaciated puppy, but soon found hope in Chako Pit Bull Rescue's Dawn Capp.

Little Darling, the “two legged” founder of Pinups for Pitbulls, took Carla Lou on as her first rescued bully. Since then, it's been a growing love affair. Carla Lou's amazing personality and love for everyone helped to establish the Pinup organization. And now, this 17 year old pit bull is returning the love that has been given to her by Little Darling.

Through the efforts of Carla Lou, Little Darling, and the rest of the burlesque based crew, Pinups for Pitbulls is growing. Dogs are being saved, and lives are being changed.

Unfortunately, the list of dogs in need is also growing, at a rapid pace.

This July (18th), we join together to celebrate Carla Lou's 17th birthday.

She doesn't want gifts or treats this year. The happy pit bull doesn't want a cake to celebrate her milestone. Instead, she wants everyone to help celebrate and save at the same time.

Carla Lou isn't the best when it comes to typing and using the computer, but in her honor, Little Darling has set up a charity drive. Breed specific legislation, a negative, biased media perception, and an overwhelming presence in the shelters across the nation have contributed to an increase need.

This pretty pitty wants to save the lives of dogs just like herself. She needs continued resources to rescue, help educate, and continue to change the negative stigma that surrounds pit bull type dogs like her.

Readers of this article can DONATE to the cause, and know that their efforts are making a difference.

Pinups for Pitbulls is a fully vested, 501c3 organization. All donations are tax deductible.

There are those who say you can't save them all. We'll never know unless we try.
