It’s that time of the year when our collective thoughts turn to…..lobster.
The homely lobster has had its share of ups and downs. Prior to the mid-nineteenth century, when New Yorkers and Bostonians developed a taste for it, lobster was considered a sign of poverty or as a food for indentured servants or lower members of society in Maine, Massachusetts and the Canadian Maritimes, and servants specified in employment agreements that they would not eat lobster more than twice per week!
My, my, my…..how much the maligned lobster’s fortunes have changed. In coastal communities all over the country, the lobster is now celebrated unlike any other crustacean throughout history.
From September 23rd through the 25th, the South Bay pays homage to all things lobster at the 16th Annual Redondo Beach Lobster Festival.
Lobster may reign supreme at this classic South Bay event but there are plenty of other reasons to attend. The music line-up features live bands and DJ’s playing throughout the weekend as well as mechanical bull rides, carnival midway games, face painting and balloon art. The Redondo Beach Young Professionals are hosting a VIP Lobster Lounge which will surely be the place to see and be seen.
There are several lobster meal packages available for your dining pleasure. If you’re not in the mood for lobster (gasp!) or wearing a bib doesn’t appeal to your fashion sense, other options are available. Baleen, Joe’s Crab Shack and Sophia’s Mexican Kitchen will be serving up alternative mouth-watering dishes.
The Festival takes place at the Seaside Lagoon next to King Harbor, just north of the Redondo Beach Pier at 200 Portofino Way in Redondo Beach (at the corner of Harbor Drive and Beryl Street).
All lobster, all the time. Long live lobster!
