16th Annual Floating Lantern Ceremony

More than 6,000 candle-lit floating lanterns will adorn the waters of Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park this evening. This annual Memorial Day event, sponsored by Shinnyo-en began as a way to foster peace, love, kindness and compassion within the community.

Individual lanterns, which were built by volunteers in the spring will be available to the public at 10:00 am at the lantern request tent. All lanterns are free however, donations are accepted and will be gifted to the City and County of Honolulu for the beautification of Ala Moana Beach Park.

The event is open to the all members of the public regardless of spiritual belief, both as a way to remember loved ones who have passed on, and to help in the healing process.

When the gathering is over, lanterns will be retrieved, cleaned and refurbished for future use. Prayers and remembrances will be removed and taken care of in a respectful manner.

Free parking is available at the Hawai'i Convention Center from 7:00 am- midnight. A complimentary shuttle will be running from the Center to the site starting 3:30 pm, and from the site to the Center from 7:45 pm.
