Summer is fully on us in the New York City area. When we are outdoors we consider the options of refreshments laid out throughout the landscape. Since choices are plentiful it becomes almost a coin toss when deciding where to refresh. The barometer for us is the child friendly atmosphere presented. With two 11 yr old boys it becomes more about their needs than the Mothers. So this last week has been no exception.
Many choices of ice cream, frozen yogurt, ices, and various cold frosty drinks. The impetus behind the visit to the Upper East side 16 Handles store was the promise of a free smoothie with a coupon downloaded from the site. The tricky part was that the smoothie was only free if the coupon was presented by Friday, July 18, 2014. So off we went with coupons in hand to sample the frosty treat.
Choices were Very Berry, Pineapple/Mango, and Strawberry/Banana-certainly something for everyone. The adults in the party settled for the miniature slurp allowed by the children in tow. So as always the parents filled up cups with choices of frozen yogurt and delicious toppings.
Having been to this location many times since their opening a few years ago it was a pleasant surprise to be greeted by Brandon, the employee designated to provide samples to the customers. It has always been my feeling that this system was ingenious-sample a few flavors then sell a large bowl of one, or more of these flavors.
What I was especially impressed with on this visit was the passion with which Brandon doled out the samples; of course he had the mandatory smile with the welcoming invitation to try a flavor, but what was unique was his ability to twirl the flavors in the tiny sample cup like a professional barrister of ice cream. When I commented how amazing this was he shyly smiled wider with a look of gratitude on his face.
This welcome made me delighted to be at 16 Handles. In life many people cross paths in situations that are brief and inconsequential. This chance meeting with Brandon lifted my spirits with the knowledge that no matter what someone is doing with their lives there is always an opportunity for excellence. When you are passionate about what you are doing it shows as well as creates a chain reaction to all around to be the best they can be.
My motto is: be the best you you can be which in turn will allow the best them to be realized. You bet there will be many more visits to this 16 Handles store over the Summer, and I hope Brandon is there or if not, the other friendly workers who clearly believe the customers experience is as important as the quality and taste of the products they are offering.
