Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) is back at it again. They are conducting their 15th Annual Home 4 The Holidays Campaign. It is very exciting this year as HWAC has conjoined with a brand new partner.
The new partner is Blue Buffalo Pet Food Company. HWAC and Blue are inviting you to join the San Diego local rescue facilities and various VIP human and canine guests as they celebrate this year’s Home 4 The Holidays Campaign.
The goal of this year’s Campaign is to find loving homes for over one million orphan pets worldwide. The Kickoff Party this year will be Wednesday, October 16th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. It will take place at the Snooze Eatery in Del Mar and will serve up winter festivities for all to enjoy. In fact, the San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts will be present at the event to make a very special Home 4 The Holidays proclamation at 5:30.
HWAC originally gave birth to the Home 4 The Holidays pet adoption drive in 1999. Back then the goal was simple, to find homes for orphaned pets during the holiday season. This year their goal is steep and in order to get the word out, they formed the new partnership with Blue Buffalo.
HWAC is surrounded by the orphaned pets who made news this year. Together with the pets, local rescue facility representatives and their available adoptables; and a guest list of VIPs who provided support, assistance and philanthropic man-power to the cause of rescue and pet adoption in 2013, they will kick off the event and listen to the proclamation for this year.
Home 4 the Holidays is an annual, international, three‐month pet‐adoption campaign dedicated to finding happy, loving homes for orphan pets. The annual campaign was initiated in 1999 by Helen Woodward Animal Center President and CEO Mike Arms when he noticed that a majority of rescue facilities were closing their doors during the holiday season – a primary time of year for family pet additions. With shelter doors closed, would-be adopters were resorting to shopping pet stores or puppy mills for holiday pet purchases. Not only did this increase the business of non-reputable stores and breeders, but Arms was aware that the staff at these businesses were rarely trained to scrutinize the likelihood of a successful animal/family match, thus increasing the number of pets sent to shelters once the season was over.
Many individuals are unaware, but once the shelters close for the holidays, the animals that are left over are euthanized so that the agencies do not have to pay anyone to come in to feed and clean up after the animals once the organization is shut down. Many wonderful animals do not live to find their forever, loving homes because of this!
The Blue Buffalo Home 4 the Holidays Campaign requests that shelters keep their doors open throughout the holiday months. They provide these organizations with the marketing tools to get the word out. Through a collective group of over 3,500 pet adoption agencies, facilities and rescue‐groups, located throughout all 50 states and 23 countries, this campaign has become the largest pet adoption campaign on record. It has helped save over eight million pets since its inception 15 holidays ago. The pet adoption drive officially began October 1, 2013. It will run through January 2, 2014, and is aiming to place over 1 million orphan pets this holiday season.
Helen Woodward Animal Center has been excited to announce its new partnership with the pet food company Blue Buffalo. The quality company has stepped forward to join Home 4 the Holidays and support shelters in their efforts to help pets find new forever homes. With their support, and the continued efforts of Home 4 the Holidays animal welfare groups across the planet, this is sure to be another exciting and successful year.
“There are so many beautiful orphan pets euthanized each year due to shelter overcrowding,” said Arms. “Over 3 million orphaned dogs and cats in the US alone are put to death. That is one pet every eight seconds. It doesn’t make sense when millions of families will add a furry family member to their homes during the holiday season. We just need to get the word out that the perfect pet is waiting to meet them right down the road at the nearest animal facility.”
