15. Yuna Kim KOR
World Championships – short program
Too bad she only performed this program once – and it could very well be the one and only time we see it ever. Olympic champ Yuna Kim’s short program at Worlds had all the makings of another classic – her James Bond short from the previous season is certainly one of the best ever. Sometimes, you just wish that you could splice in a clean triple lutz-triple toe to the beginning of this program.

Year In Review: Part 1 | Part 2
It’s interesting, because I thought Kim should have been behind eventual champion Miki Ando after this short program and ahead of her in the free skate. But for me, this was the more coherently-composed program of the two. Her homage to Korea free skate needed a whole lot more competition time – the theme was complex and it wasn’t quite together yet at Worlds.
I’ve often found her musical timing to be very strong. She is well aware of where the music is and where she is in her program. There’s rarely ever a rush to fit her moves to the music, it’s as if it just all works out by itself. A prime example of this was the double axel in this short program – landed at exactly the right time and then into a right back outside rocker also exactly at the right time. It’s these subtleties that have made her musicality so incredible.
Again, it’s too bad that this wasn’t a flawless skate. But enjoy it for what it is.
