14th Annual Tour de Palm Springs rolls through the valley this week end

The 14th annual Tour de Palm Springs, presented by CVSPIN, will be held this Saturday, February 11, 2012 with festivities beginning Friday, February 10.  Nearly 10,000 cyclists of all levels, from recreational pleasure to advanced, will join the ride to raise money for valley charities.

With a variety of cyclist levels there are 5, 10, 25, 55 and 100 mile routes with food and water stops along the way.  For those without wheels, local bike shops Fun Seekers, Big Wheel tours, and Tri-A-Bike, offer bike rentals.

A vendor expo begins Friday, February 10th at Noon and runs through Saturday at 5 p.m. when the ride concludes.  Replicating the weekly Village Fest in downtown Palm Springs, the vendor expo will be held on North Palm Canyon Drive between Tahquitz and Amado Road.  The expo is open to the public and features a variety of offerings, from bicycle retailers, clothing and gear to other sports paraphernalia, eyewear, massage services, jewelry and other accessory booths.  There will be an exemplary food court offering a variety of cuisine and snacks for the whole family to enjoy.

This year the event features a new Tour de Jazz entertainment extravaganza with bands performing along the perimeters of the expo.  Notably performing is the local jazz-rock fusion band Penny University, the jazz band from College of the Desert, and five local high school bands including Palm Springs High, Desert Hot Springs High, Shadow High, Indio High and La Quinta High School.

All Valley charities are able to receive funds from the event by signing up with CVSPIN.  Last year $225,000 was raised and distributed to 118 organizations.

The tour moves back downtown this year on North Palm Canyon with an amazing vendor expo including bike retailer booths, food, entertainment and more – open to the public. Nearly 1,000 volunteers support the event – from the ride to the Expo – with festivities beginning on Friday through the end of the ride on Saturday.

“We are thrilled to be back downtown this year knowing that the thousands of participants and attendees has a great impact on tourism in Palm Springs, including drawing from the 10,000 riders – and additional family and friends – to  local restaurants and retailers,” states Bob Leidner, President of C.V.S.P.I.N. “We also have added a vibrant Tour de Jazz to the celebrations, enhancing the food, entertainment and retail expo area.”
