Wednesday, a $140 billion jobs bill passed the Senate; the bill would extend the unemployment insurance deadline until the end of the year. It would also extend several dozen tax breaks that are about to expire.
The jobs bill passed the Senate by a 62-36 vote, and will now move to the House for a vote. Many of the 15 million unemployed Americans want the White House to do more to create jobs, and this bill doesn’t include any new major initiatives. The jobs bill does include a $15 billion job creation effort, but many Americans feel that more could be done.
A $154 billion job creation bill just passed the house in December, and many Republicans are concerned with adding more money to the deficit. This new jobs bill will extend COBRA health insurance benefits and unemployment insurance benefits for the unemployed until the end of the year.
Under the new bill, tax credits that expired at the end of 2009 and would be extended until the end of 2010: a deduction for education expenses for teachers, and a research and development credit for businesses.
The unemployment in the state of Utah has been steadily rising over the past few months. In December, the Utah unemployment rate was 6.7%, up from 6% in August. Most unemployed Utah residents take advantage of unemployment benefits if they are eligible. They depend and rely on that money while looking for work.
