According to Wednesday's CBS New York News, a devastating house fire claimed the lives of 14 dogs and cats in Clifton, New Jersey, on Tuesday afternoon.

The house on Mountain View Drive was a personal residence, as well as the location of a pet-sitting business known as "Your Family Pet Sitters," which was operated by Laura Kieffer. At the time that the two-alarm fire started, a total of 16 animals were inside of the structure; some of the trapped animals were rescued from the house, but 11 dogs and three cats perished in the blaze.

Clifton Fire Department’s Deputy Chief, Norman Tahan described the fire as "stubborn," and told Pix 11 News:

Several times we had to pull out because the building was going to flash over,”

“Then the roof began collapsing, so we had to pull out again.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and the house is considered to be a total loss. The pet sitting business may also find itself in trouble with the city because it was apparently being operated without the city's knowledge or approval.
