More Chicago shootings occurred late Thursday night at a park on Chicago’s southwest side, according to a Sun-Times report on Thursday night. This time, there were thirteen people shot, including a 3-year-old boy who is in critical condition.
Witnesses say that two men started shooting at a group of people who were at a basketball court in Cornell Square Park in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Among those shot was Deonta “Tay-man” Howard, 3, who was shot in the face and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. The boy’s 22-year-old Julian Harris said that men with dreadlocks and guns in a gray sedan fired at him when he was at the corner of Wood and 51st Street, and then headed north on wood to continue shooting at the park. Harris said that the shooters hit the light pole next to him on the corner but he ducked down and ran into the house. According to Harris, the guys have been coming around the area looking for people to shoot every night. He called it “gang-banging stuff.”
Witnesses at the park said the two men got out of the car and started shooting.
Police claim that the incident was about gangs.
A woman identified as the grandmother of the three-year-old boy who got shot lost her son to gun violence on Labor Day. Before going to the hospital with her family to be with the boy, she went off on the police, yelling, “You…. Cops can’t solve s---!”
One of the people who lives in the immediate area, 70-year-old Francis John who has lived there for 30 years, told a reporter that it’s bad in that area – but not as bad as it used to be.
Just before this incident happened, local media was reporting that that four people were shot in Chicago within a couple of hours around 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
All of this shooting occurred as the FBI released their list of the cities with the most homicides in the United States. Chicago leads the list with 500 murders in 2012.
