A 13-month-old girl was shot to death in the arms of her babysitter, who was also shot, as the two walked home from a New Orleans park on Thursday. A bullet went through the back of the babysitter, then through the chest of 13-month-old Londyn Samuels, killing the child, according to USA Today on Aug. 30.
The shooting happened on Thursday evening around 8:20 in the 2800 block of S. Saratoga, near Washington. While some reports indicate the child died in the babysitters arms while still in the street, Fox News reports that the toddler died after being transported to the hospital.
The sound of gunshots pierced the Center City neighborhood and two men were seen running from the area. Two men and a woman were taken into custody for questioning after a four-hour standoff with the SWAT team. There is no word on what role, if any, the three played in this heinous crime.
Crimestoppers released images of two people seen running from the area, which were captured on a surveillance camera from a nearby business. The lack of calls into Crimestoppers over this case is concerning for law enforcement. Crimestoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.
Londyn Samuels mother, 22-year-old Andrea Samuels, was ironically working at a non-profit cafe that promotes anti-violence in a neighborhood riddled with crime. This incident has caused the Mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landriew to declare “enough is enough.”
The 18-year-old babysitter is in stable condition in an area hospital. She called Keion Reed, 20, the baby's father, immediately after being shot to tell him that she and the toddler had been shot. The phone call is described as “frantic” and left Reed shocked and feeling as if this was all a bad dream that he'd hopefully wake-up from. Unfortunately, it wasn't just a nightmare, his little girl was gone.
