“How can anyone be right when everybody’s wrong?” Great question! And that may be at the base of the great political debate that has stalled the raising of the $16.8 trillion Federal debt ceiling.
The daily news is filled with sensationalism as to the political slug fest between House Speaker John Boehner and President Barack H. Obama. But, just as interesting are the political chess moves initiated by bit players Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican leader Mitch McConnell.
For the American public, the lines blur between the Right and the Left as those impacted by the government shutdown protest on the national quad. They, like many American’s realize that the so called debate over national healthcare has been sidelined by the ongoing feud between the “Tea Party” Republicans and a Socialist leaning President, and, the Democrats that voted him to power.
The Republican leadership has held steadfast on their collective pledge to politically crush Obama at any cost. And in this case the American people are once again picking up an estimated $1billion per day cost of the government shutdown.
Sunday marks day 13 of the Federal Government fiscal shutdown that has left 800,000(non-essential) Federal employees feeling a bit insecure about their job security. Last week the military’s Pentagon ordered 400,000 of them back to work, and Congress passed a bill guaranteeing the “furloughed” employees a reimbursement for lost work hours. In other words, a paid vacation while Congress argues the finer points of “Obama Care.”
While that works for them, other important federally funded social programs and benefits have been impacted by the shutdown. It’s been reported by the White House propaganda machine that private charity has offered to pick up the slack left by a non-decisive, politically gridlocked House of Representatives. While President Obama calls the shutdown “irresponsible” one may note in his absence, that the President has not backed out a paragraph in his mission statement to fully implement “Obama Care” in its entirety. Nor have Boehner and company in their pledge to over throw it!
As the political war drums sound, the advertising dollar enabled media spew of the Fox machine keeps the general populace floating in a fear based stew of 24/7 minutia driven uncertainty. The public angst is palatable. “We the people” are informed as to the deadlock between political opposites as if it were truly news, as if the “Federal Government of the United States of America” will actually default on its debt come Oct. 18; if a compromise is not reached in the House of Representatives.
As of Sunday night that compromise has not been reached and the media would have you believe that a resolution is nowhere in sight.
NBC News has reported that there are those on the Hill( Tea Party) that believe that the U.S. must default on its debt to force true fiscal policy change in government. Perhaps that’s true enough, but, at what expense?
As my old uncle Charlie Parks used to say, “Its crap Johnny!” “Politics is a show invented to keep the people distracted from the real issues at hand.” I believe will see a resolution reached just in time to save the nation and the world from the “ dreaded default” of still the largest economy on the planet.
