The 12th Annual Rich Products Corporations Golden Isle Celebrity Classic fishing tournament is less than a month away. An all-release, two-day event targeting redfish and spotted seatrout, the tournament fishes out of Morningstar Marinas Golden Isles on St. Simons Island, Georgia. This year’s tournament is Oct. 4-5, 2013.
The tourney is part of the Redbone@Large Red-Trout Series of events, which benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Designed to “Catch the Cure” for the adolescent disease, the original Redbone Tournament was started in Islamorada, Florida a quarter century ago.
Upon discovering that their newborn daughter Nicole had CF, founders Susan and Gary Ellis recruited some of their friends to start a fundraiser. Among those folks was legendary Boston Red Sox slugger, Ted Williams. Their first event raised $16,000 and was the catalyst for more than two dozen associated tournaments around the nation. In 2011 those events netted $1.3 million for the CF coffers.
The Golden Isles event has categories for bait fishing, artificial lures and fly fishing. Points are award for each fish above a minimum size that is caught and released. Bonus points are given for each time an angler matches a redfish with a seatrout to achieve a “slam.” Fish taken on bait are worth 50 points, ones on artificial lures earn 100 and those taken on flies garner 200.
Awards are given for top team, individual and ladies scores. Also biggest fish of each species gets an award, as does the top angler for day one and day two of the event. Division awards are presented to the top bait, artificial lure and fly fishers as well.
Co-chair of the event is Cal Collier, Jr. of Atlanta. His son William was born with CF and has served as the CF Ambassador for the event for several years, as well as having fished in the competition.
This year the total amount raised by the Golden Isles tournament is expected to break the $1 million dollar mark.
