It sounds like a bad joke, 125 mph, no brakes, but it is all too true.
The story of a driver whose accelarator jammed on a French highway at 125 mph is making headlines Thursday in the UK.
The headline in Thursday’s Daily Mail read,” Driver in 150-mile terror drive as accelerator JAMS at 125mph on French dual carriageway.”
A carriageway is a freeway or highway.
The headline in the Guardian read, “French driver trapped for an hour in speeding 125mph car with no brakes
“Frank Lecerf finally came to a stop in a ditch in Belgium when his Renault Laguna ran out of petrol after 200km trip.”
The 36-year-old Lecerf said the experience was, “As if my life was flashing before me’.
Lecerf’s trip started in Pont-de-Metz, near Amiens, in Northern France. He intended to make a quick trip to the supermarket.
Because of an apparent mechanical problem, Lecerf’s car accelerated to 125mph. He called police and the cops put him though to a Renault engineer who tried to talk him through bringing the car to a stop.
Police aided him by giving him a “safety” convoy.. He eventually drove about 150 miles and crossed over the border into Belgium. He finally ran out of gas and ran into a ditch in Alveringem, Belgium.
Lecerf said it wasn’t the first time he had a problem with his car speed jamming. But he said that Renault mechanics assured him the problem was fixed. His lawyer said he planned to file a legal complaint.
