Actors Forest Whitaker and Chiwetel Ejiofor will go head to head for best actor when the 20th SAG Awards ceremiony is held next month. The nominees for the SAG Awards were announced on Wednesday Dec. 11 in Los Angeles. Whitaker and Ejiofor were nominated for their performances in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “12 Years a Slave”. They will be joined by Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Bruce Dern (“Nebraska”) and Tom Hanks (“Captain Phillips”) in the oustanding performance by a male actor in a leading role category.
Whitaker’s co-star Oprah Winfrey earned a best supporting actress nomination and will face Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”), Julia Roberts (“August: Osage County”), Jennifer Lawrence (“American Hustle”) and June Squibb (“Nebraska”).
In the oustanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role, “12 Years a Slave” is represented by Michael Fassbender who will contend against Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”), James Gandolfini (“Enough Said”), Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips”), and Daniel Bruhl (“Rush”).
The films “12 Years a Slave”,”Dallas Buyers Club”, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler”, “American Hustle”, and “August: Osage County” are the nominees in the category for oustanding performance by a cast in motion pictures. “12 Years a Slave” which is directed by Steve McQueen leads all film nominees with a total of 4 nods.
Other notable nominees include Angela Bassett in the outstanding performance by a lead actress in a television movie or mini-series category for her work in the Lifetime movie “Betty & Coretta”. Kerry Washington picked up an outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series nod for ABC’s “Scandal” and Don Cheadle scored a nomination in the outstanding performance by a male actor in a comedy series category. Cheadle stars in the Showtime series “House of Lies”.
