  1. Purdy is the first US Paralympian to compete on Dancing with the Stars.
    Purdy and her dance partner/choreographer, Derek Hough, garnered enough votes after their week one performance to avoid being one of the two teams eliminated. Purdy and Hough scored a 24/30 for their Cha Cha Cha on Episode 1 (March 17, 2014). On Episode 2 (March 24, 2014), Purdy and Hough showed off their skills and enthusiasm with an entertaining Swing dance. Their hard work earned them another 24/30. Watch Episode 3 of the season on March 31, 2014--according to Purdy’s Facebook page, she will be debuting new legs.
  2. Purdy is the first and only female on Team USA to medal in the Paralympics in para-snowboarding.
    The para-snowboarding classification made its official Winter Paralympic debut at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games. Para-snowboard is part of the alpine skiing discipline, and there were medals awarded for both Women's Para Snowboard Cross – Standing and Men's Para Snowboard Cross – Standing. Team USA swept the men’s podium, but Purdy was the only U.S. woman to medal.
  3. Purdy appeared in one of Duracell’s “Trust Your Power” ads.
    Duracell’s “Trust Your Power” series celebrates the enduring human spirit. Purdy's "Trust Your Power" video explains how she "could have given up, but instead, saw her true potential, and that, "Amy trusted in her own power to get back up and continue to do what she loved most." According to a press release on the Duracell website, Jeff Jarrett (marketing director for Duracell) said, “Amy truly embodies the Trust Your Power spirit,” and “It’s an honor to help tell her story – and inspire others to trust their power, no matter what comes their way.”
  4. Purdy is the only double amputee competing in the international sport of para-snowboarding.
    According to, “Purdy got back to snowboarding just seven months after her legs were amputated. She then became a huge success in the sport, becoming a three-time World Cup Para-Snowboard winner.” Purdy was ranked as the top female adaptive snowboarder after winning three world cup gold medals back-to-back.
  5. Purdy was a competitor on the Amazing Race.
    Purdy competed on season 21 of the Amazing Race in 2012. She and her long-time boyfriend, Daniel Gale, were the second team eliminated and ended up finishing 10th out of 11 teams. According to the Hollywood Reporter, while Purdy and Gale were initially considered among the front-runners to win the competition, they were unable to find one of the locations holding their next clue—despite enlisting the services of three different taxi drivers.
  6. Purdy gave a TED talk.
    In May 2011 at TEDxOrangeCoast, Purdy gave an inspirational TED talk entitled, “Living beyond limits.” According to, her talk shows us “how to draw inspiration from life’s obstacles.” Purdy teaches us that “our borders and our obstacles can only do two things: 1) stop us in our tracks, or 2) force us to get creative.” She says, “my legs haven’t disabled me. If anything they’ve enabled me. They’ve forced me to rely on my imagination and to believe in the possibilities.”
