Black Friday marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the city. Five years ago, it also marked the launch of the original matte nail polish.
KO Knockout Cosmetics released the aptly named Flatte Black on Black Friday. The gorgeously designed packaging, a frosted perfume bottle with an extra long handle, made KO Knockout stand out amongst all the competing polishes on the market. This, coupled with the uniquely lightning quick dry, ultra flat formula, sealed its fate as a cult favorite in luxury nail polish.
KO nail polishes are cruelty-free, domestically manufactured, Formaldehyde-free, DBP-free, Toluene-free, Formaldehyde Resin-free and Camphor-free. If that is not enough, they have cheeky, nostalgic names that make them hard to resist. According to Lara Eurdolian, the newest partner and spokesperson for KO-- the polishes, as well as their names, are inspired by industrial materials, nature, art, Mike Potter's (the founder) travels, and his childhood. Reading a list of their names is like taking a walk through New York City as a kid; from a pale green reminiscent of the oxidized copper of the Statue Liberty, to a beige grey named concrete, to the familiar dusty pink of calamine lotion.
Eurdolian, who joined the team after many years of patronage, and coming unto her own as a great style and product expert through her experience working with beauty brands such as Jurlique and Kiehl's, has taken the time to share some of her favorite things, and some beauty tips and tricks for the holidays with Examiner.
EXAMINER: Which winter holidays do you celebrate?
LARA: Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. I love this time of year, the festive, giving spirit and everything is all lit up with people celebrating.
EXAMINER: How do you celebrate them?
LARA: At home in Boston with my family (except for New Years, which I usually spend with my friends in NYC. However this was my first Thanksgiving in NYC and my family came to me and we celebrated with my close friends. This time, when the ball drops for the New Year, I’ll be on a plane to Uganda so I guess you could say how I celebrate is a bit unpredictable these days.
EXAMINER: What is your favorite holiday memory?
LARA: Growing up every year we would get dressed up and go to the Boston Ballet to see the Nutcracker. I rarely made it past intermission as my four year old self was notorious for sleeping through ballets, plays, movies and just about any production that lasted past bed time. Even so, going to the ballet with my family was always so special and made the holidays that much more magical.
EXAMINER: What is your pick this year for a fail proof holiday beauty gift for your favorite gals? What is your pick for the fellows?
LARA: You can never go wrong with a bottle on Knock Out for the ladies -- makes the perfect stocking stuffer! For the guys, a gift set from Kiehl’s.
EXAMINER: You have 15 minutes to get ready for a holiday soriee, what do you do?
LARA: Unfortunately, I’m usually in a time crunch, so it’s important for my makeup case to have everything I need (and this is where eyeshadow palettes come in handy!). If my hair is already blown out, then red lips, shimmer on the eyes and I’m out the door. Otherwise a foolproof bun is always a chic and quick option if you’re in a time crunch.
EXAMINER: Glitter, yes or no? Why?
LARA: YES! Our founder, Mike Potter did the hair and makeup for Hedwig and the Angry Inch, so needless to say we’re all about glitter at Knock Out. Perhaps some glitter nail polish shades are in our future -- although you didn’t hear it from me.
EXAMINER: Do you believe in Santa? Why?
I believe in the magic of Santa and what he represents. I was at the airport last week amongst lines of people with delayed flights along with the stress and frustration that goes with it. And out of no where this little girl starts singing Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer at the top of her lungs and begins dancing around. At that moment we all started laughing and our spirits we’re immediately lifted.
EXAMINER: Any final words of wisdom for how to look great and feel great all the way through this holiday season?
LARA: Always come from a place of kindness, no matter what the circumstances are.
