On June 28th, the eight Coro Mendocino winemakers will celebrate the release of the 11th vintage of their Coro blend. Hosting the celebration again this year is the Little River Inn in Little River, California. This celebration is driven by pairing these outstanding and unique Mendocino wines with culinary delights imagined and prepared by CIA trained Marc Dym, Executive Chef and co-owner of the Little River Inn. Coro Mendocino is a signature blend from 100 percent Mendocino County grapes, individually crafted in Mendocino County, following a strict series of protocols prescribed by the Consortium Mendocino and inspired by European fine wine categories like Italian Chianti Classico. Each Coro wine must contain between 40-70 percent Zinfandel. The balance of the grapes in the blend may contain up to nine of the other named varietals. This approach is intended to recognize and honor the 'field blends' planted by so many of the original Italian grape growers in Mendocino County.
All Coro wines must be aged at least one year in barrel, a minimum of 25% and a maximum of 75% in new oak, and a minimum of one year in bottle before release.
During past vintages some winemakers have decided not to produce a Coro based upon the quality of the vintage as each winemaker strives to achieve the goal of an ultra-premium Mendocino blend following the strictly defined bylaws. The 2011 vintage will represent eight (8) of the Consortium current ten (10) members. Proudly representing this vintage are Barra, Brutocao, Clos du Bois, Fetzer, Golden, McFadden, Parducci and Testa.
Of course, the party is made a celebration through the venue and the food. The historic Little River Inn, celebrating its own 75th anniversary this year, can not be topped in terms of ambiance (located on the Mendocino Coast overlooking the Pacific) or gastronomic delights. Cally Dym and Melissa Pyorre, Fifth Generation Innkeepers, offer the best in amenities in lodging, 9-hole golf course, tennis courts and a day spa (they are dog friendly) and Executive Chief, Marc Dym (married to Cally) is widely known for his exquisite morsels produced with locally sourced fish, game and produce.
This year's five (5) course menu includes: appetizers (Sweet pea pureé w/ Dungeness crab & truffle oil); First Course (Dungeness crab, green lip mussles, and fish); Second Course (Smoked Duck Breast Salad local greens, Mission figs, burrata cheese, almonds, dijon, balsamic reduction); Entrée Course (”Confit” Pork Ossobucco); slow cooked pork shanks with saffron risotto, grilled broccolini and fennel tomato demi-glace); Dessert (Sable Breton Biscuit with warm black berry compote and Penny Royal Laychee fresh goat milk cheese). Of course, all paired with the appropriate Coro Mendocino wines.
