Wasn't this past weekend great for riding? or perhaps for sailing, considering the steady 19-MPH wind on Sunday afternoon... Regardless, 75 degrees in late January is a real treat, so try not to brag to your buddies in the Midwest and New England about how much seat time you already have this year.
If you're one of the thousands of Houston-area cyclists training for the 2013 edition of the BP MS150 (you do have April 20-21, 2013 circled on your calendar, right?), then it's time to look ahead a few weeks to your next recommended training ride. For Saturday, February 16, that would be the Humble Lions Bike Ride, now in its 11th annual running.
The ride leaves from the Humble Career & Technology Education Center at 9155 Will Clayton Road, Humble, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Participants may choose a out-and back route of 22 miles or a loop route of 46 or 51 miles. The loop rides will cross Lake Houston on the McKay Bridge, so watch out if you're afraid of trolls. Along the route, you'll get to visit scenic Atascocita and Crosby, though hills should not be any problem.
Proceeds of the ride benefit the Humble Lions Club Charities, in particular the Hearts Scholarship Foundation and handicapped and diabetic children.
Early-bird registration by mail, fax or on-line is $25 per participant until February 1, after which it goes up to $30. Walk-up registration will be available at the start, where it will set you back $40; or see the organizer's website for registration dates at packet pick-up sites for $35. On-line registration is available through Active.com, or register on the website using PayPal. You can download a PDF of the registration form and mail or fax it in. Register by February 6th to make certain you get an official ride t-shirt. PDFs of the routes are available on the website (warning! maps are not to scale!)
Details to remember: The Humble Lions Bike Ride is a BP MS 150 recommended training ride. As with all MS150 recommended rides, standard safety rules will be enforced: helmets are required, headphones and earbuds are prohibited. You can expect course marshals; SAG, medical and mechanical support, and safety officers at road crossings. Staffed rest areas will be provided. This event will take place rain or shine.
Getting there: Take US 59 to the Will Clayton Road exit (Bush Intercontinental Airport), about three miles past Beltway 8, and turn east. The Career center is approximately 1.9 miles ahead, just past Wilson Road, on the left. Parking is available at the Center and nearby Humble ISD facilities.
