The life of a Walworth County youth was tragically cut short Wednesday, July 9 just after 12 noon in a wooded area in Sharon, the victim of one gunshot wound to the head.
The incident occurred in a wooded area behind N1602 County Trunk Highway K in the Town of Sharon. Deputies located a male juvenile with a head wound. First aid was administered and Sharon Rescue Squad responded, and the subject was transported to Mercy Janesville where he was declared brain dead at 12:38 AM on today’s date.
Eric Gutierrez, 11, of Sharon was declared brain dead at Mercy West Hospital in Janesville just 24-hours after the incident occurred.
Investigators interviewed an unidentified, teenage male witness and they collected a handgun and other items in evidence at the scene.
The Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation of this incident and further information will be disseminated as it becomes available. Under-sheriff Kurt Picknell would not comment as to whether the incident was an accident or not. It is unknown of the victim and the witness were related or even knew each other. It is also unknown the role the witness played in the event.
Residents of the rural community are stunned and saddened by this death stating that there is very little trouble or worries associated with the area. Sharon is located in central Walworth County near the Rock County border. The area is mostly comprised of farms and some industrial areas and normally considered a safe place to raise a family.
