Restraining Hollywood's very own Brandon Van Vliet gave forth the opportunity to answer my 11 questions. I wanted to give readers the insight on local film talent and a local film producing company! Read up and get to know Brandon and Restraining Hollywood a bit more!
1. What is your favorite film of all time and why?
My Favorite film is "Boogie Nights" because it has an amazing story. Great music. colorful characters and right amount of humor, drama, action and violence. It changed my life when i saw it Summer of 98'. It's just perfect, case closed.
2. What is your favorite film to be produced by Restraining Hollywood?
That's a tough one cause i love all my babies but probably "In Harm's Way". I worked on it for over 3 years so it holds a very special place in my heart. It's everything i've been working for and i'm very proud of it. We all are.
3. What is your favorite type of genre to work within?
i like all genres for different reasons. so it really depends on my mood that day. but if i had to pick one i'd say mostly comedy because it's fun to make people laugh.
4. How did Restraining Hollywood form?
Back in late 03' i left this really swanky & dirty 3 day party with strippers & i felt like i wanted to die until i got this very inspirational speech from my good friend Braden Palmer from Alternative Rock group Detuned Kytes to quit my job at the strip club and make indie films. The rest is history. True Story.
5. What is your future goals for Restraining Hollywood?
To keep making feature films, Music videos, pushing the envelope & having people talk about what we're doing. We Love our fans and even love our Haters!
6. What is your ultimate film goal for yourself?
My Ultimate Film Goal? Jeez, i never really thought about that.
Maybe a kissing scene with Lindsay Lohan? Haha!! No, Probably to make that perfect indie film that really puts Minnesota on the map. People don't take the midwest that seriously which is kind of annoying but then again there's a lot on the west and east coast thats hard to take seriously so what do you do?
7. What do you believe is the high point so far for Restraining Hollywood?
Well. there's definitely been some low points. So i'd have to say these last couple months with releasing both "Potpourri" & "In Harm's Way" & seeing people's reactions to the films all the while knowing we have more projects to do in 2012. Pretty empowering stuff to say the least.
8. How did the decision about producing In Harm's Way come about?
It came about when my good friend & talented Actor Mike Borka brought me the first act of what turned into "In Harm's Way" back in July of 08' & said to me he wanted to make this film. We worked on it for a while then we got John Karsko in to co-write & direct. Then we were officially off to the races!
9. Where did the inspiration for your character from 'In Harm's Way' come from?My Character in "In Harm's Way" is an eclectic, violent gangster named J.Markeaur. My influences for him were Tony Soprano, Paul Sorvino's character in Goodfellas & Mike Patton.
10. What will Restraining Hollywood's next project be?
Well, we have a few that we're definitely doing in 2012. It's a little unorganized now because of all the Premieres/Promoting & Partying but we're shooting a second season of our web series One Night Stand. I team up with Writer/Director John Karsko on that. It's about a defunct band and their never ending troubles with drugs, women and egos. Director Elliot Diviney might have a political superhero musical film in the tradition of South park that we'll be doing and there's a couple others surfacing as well but i don't like to talk too much unless something is for sure. Just be on the look out because we will have some great things on the horizon. I'm in too deep and can't stop.
11. Do you have any advice for local Minnesota filmmakers?
Follow your dreams and eventually sell your soul! Ha! No, j/k. Who am i to give advice? Just keep doing what you're doing & make things happens.
