Friday, September 5, 2014 marks the 10 year anniversary of Salinas Oldtown’s First Friday Artwalk. A group of community-minded artists and residents of Monterey County, Artistas Unidos - Artists United first organized First Friday Artwalks as a public benefit nonprofit organization based in Salinas, California, home of Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbeck.
The brainchild of Patricia Triumpho Sullivan, thw concept doe First Friday Artwalks evolved from her work as the organizer and curator of Bailando con la Muerte, an annual Day of the Dead celebration in Salinas. The formation of Artistas Unidos - Artists United was inspired by the need for local artists, youth and residents to connect in creative ways, is a fundamental part of new culturally diverse educational opportunities, and to promote these communal portals to visitors and residents alike. Again, organized and run by Triumpho Sullivan.
The mission of First Friday Artwalk is to “bring all cultures together through the arts.” Furthermore, the aim of the community aims to further intercultural understanding, cultivate cultural tourism, and the economic advancement of local artists and youth in underserved population. According to the group’s vision:
“We encourage people of all cultures to work together in our community, to better understand each other, to celebrate our cultural differences, and to address our common cultural concerns. Our PROGRAM forges and strengthens bonds between residents from varying backgrounds, and benefits the fundamental groups in Monterey County: familial, cultural, and communal. In order to overcome cultural barriers in our area, we utilize all disciplines in the arts to provide a venue for local artists to communicate as a group, and use this forum to share their messages with the entire community. As one of the few arts organizations in the Monterey Bay Area to host an Artist in Residency Program, Artistas Unidos - Artists United contributes to awareness of community diversity by hosting artists from around the world to live and work in our area and provide workshops for all interested residents.”
The First Friday Artwalks have grown to include more and more artists, businesses, and local organizations, and have maintained a strong presence in the Salinas and Montery County communities.
