A 107-year-old Arkansas man threatened residents and provoked a shootout out with the police that ended in his death on Saturday night. According to a September 8 report from NBC News, Monroe Isadore, 107, was shot and killed by the Pine Bluff Police when he opened fire on the officers.
Arkansas Matters reports that two residents at W.16th Street in Pine Bluff, Arkansas called the Pine Bluff Police alleging that Isadore Monroe had threatened them with a gun. Upon the arrival of the police officers, Monroe Isadore retreated to a bedroom. Isadore reportedly began shooting at the police as soon as they made their presence known.
The officers retreated and called in a SWAT team for backup. Negotiations with Isadore proved fruitless so the SWAT team slipped a camera into the room to assess the situation and determined he had a handgun.
The SWAT team then decided to gas Monroe in an attempt to persuade him to give up the gun, but he continued to shoot at them through the window, reports NBC News. Meanwhile, police officers broke down the door to the bedroom, at which point Isadore began shooting at the officers. When the police officers returned fire, Monroe Isadore was shot and killed.
There is no word on why 107-year-old Monroe Isadore threatened residents or why he opened fire on the Pine Buff Police. While some speculate that Isadore may have wanted to be shot, others question whether he could have been saved.
