It is being called the biggest celebrity nude photos hack ever by many media outlets, and the number of celebs targeted is at least over 100. CBS News reported Sept. 1 that the massive trove of nude photos began to leak on 4Chan and Reddit, with the original user claiming that the first postings of nude photos of model Kate Upton, Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, actress Victoria Justice, actor/singer Ariana Grande and others would be followed by more in the near future.
It is being called "The Fappening," the massive nude photo scandal of hacked intimate pictures on 4Chan of what is now looking like maybe as many as 423 photos of over 100 compromised celebrities, according to the Mirror. Although the hacked nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence, Elizabeth Mary Winstead, and Kate Upton have already been confirmed as real, other celebs are crying fake. But the number of celeb A-listers has been growing and includes some of the most recognizable names on the planet -- like actress Kaley Cuoco, actress Lea Michelle, and Victoria's Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel.
The hacker seems to have accessed the intimate photos through cell phones, breaking into the Internet service cloud storage system to gather the images. Dan Ackman of CNET told "CBS This Morning" that the the massive hacking was likely done by more than one hacker, a group trying to make "a big splash."
If the reaction of the Internet and the news media is an indication, they've definitely created such a splash. If reactions of some of the stars impacted by the leaked nude photos are indicative, the hacker(s) have also made a few quite angry. Kate Upton and Jennifer Lawrence have threatened legal action agains the perpetrator and anyone reposting the nude photos.
"This is a flagrant violation of privacy. The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence," spokeswoman Liz Mahoney said in an emailed statement, according to Reuters.
Although Mahoney did not say who was contacted, the FBI noted their awareness of the nude photos leak. The agency "is aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter," a spokesperson for the federal agency said.
Along with Kaley Cuoco, Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and Lea Michelle, there are several other A-listers on a "Master List" that hackers supposedly have. Among them are Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Wynona Ryder, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Amber Heard, Cat Deeley, Hayden Panettiere, Kate Bosworth, Kirsten Dunst, Scarlett Johanssen, Selena Gomez, and Gabrielle Union.
