As a super-busy mom on a super-tight budget, I've had to make a lot of changes to my lifestyle, my habits, and my shopping. One thing that helps me in so many different ways is to use natural ingredients to clean my home. Things like salt, vinegar, or baking soda are so much cheaper to use, so much safer around kids and pets, and better for the environment too. Keep reading to learn 10 super simple ways to use baking soda in your bathroom.
10 tips for using baking soda in the bathroom:
- Toilet: Add 1/2 a cup of baking soda into your toilet bowl, let it sit in there for 30 minutes, then give it a quick scrub and flush. Works wonders!
- In the bath: Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to your bathwater before getting in to relax. It will do double duty - reducing the ring around the tub, while also softening your skin. And it's safe enough to use in the kid's baths too.
- Grout: Mix a paste of 1 part bleach to 3 parts baking soda. Use an old toothbrush to scrub it into dirty tiles or grout. This also works great at removing mildew stains on your grout too.
- Drains: Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda followed by 1 cup of vinegar into sink or tub drains. Let them site for 10-20 minutes, then flush with very hot water. This won't fix big clogs, but works great as a regular maintenance routine.
- Towels: Get rid of that musty smell in your bathroom towles by adding a 1/2 cup of baking soda to the rinse cycle when washing them.
- Trash can: Sprinkle some baking soda into the bottom of your trash cans after emptying, to keep yucky odors away.
- Floors: Clean your tile or other no-wax floorings by mixing a 1/2 cup of baking soda into a bucket of warm water. Mop, and rinse, for a sparkling clean floor.
- Rugs: Once a month, sprinkle baking soda on your bathroom rugs or floor mats, let sit overnight, and then vacuum in the morning. This helps keep that mildew and odor away.
- Chrome: Make a baking soda paste, using just a bit of water. Apply with a clean cloth, scrub away grime, then buff dry with another clean cloth.
- Soap scum: Make a great basic cleaner for getting rid of soap scum without using a ton of dangerous chemical cleaners. Simply mix 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup vinegar, 1 cup ammonia, and 1 gallon of warm water together. Apply liberally to areas like tub and sink, scrub while wearing rubber gloves, then rinse well.
Make sure to keep any cleaning mixtures you create using baking soda store up high, out of the reach of children and pets. These are incredibly safe compared with traditional store-bought cleaners, but you still don't want little ones getting into them and accidentally ingesting them.
