One of the perks of working in a job with paid holidays is three-day weekends. Enjoy a long weekend for Presidents' Day with one or more of these 10 ways to enjoy the weekend.
Take a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the monuments and memorials. Many presidents are honored in stone. You may learn a little about history while you're there. Be sure to stop at Ford's Theatre, where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
Since Presidents' Day is observed as Washington's Birthday in many places, visit Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. There will be three days of special events held in honor of the first president of the United States.
Stay closer to home and visit Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson's summer home. Poplar Forest will be open on a winter weekend schedule Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count this weekend. You don't have to know a lot about birds and there's plenty of help at the website. It's as simple as creating an account, spending 15 minutes or more counting the birds you see on one or more days, and submitting the information.
Celebrate a belated Valentine's Day with dinner and a movie. Drop the kids at grandma's house. You know they'll have a great time.
Head to the Roanoke Civic Center for the Monster Truck Jam. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and there's also a matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Take a road trip to Richmond for the LEGO KidsFest. This hasn't been advertised much in our area, but it's been all over the news in Richmond. The event will be held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center from Friday evening through Sunday with activities for all ages.
If you're the mother of the bride or a bride-to-be, head downtown on Sunday for the Lynchburg Bridal Expo. The event will feature over 60 wedding vendors at the Downtown Holiday Inn starting at noon.
Go see "The Pirates of Penzance" at E.C. Glass this weekend. This funny musical about pirates is perfect for the entire family.
Enjoy your bonus day on Monday by visiting Lynchburg Museum or Point of Honor. Both museums offer free admission from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the holiday. Amazement Square will also be open from 1-5 p.m. so have a little fun on the way home.
Long weekends are great. Even though it will be cold on Saturday and Sunday, temperatures will warm up a bit on Monday. Have a great weekend, however you spend it.
