10 tips on how to eat a healthier gluten-free diet

Recently gluten-free products was nominated as one of the 7 Worst Supermarkets Rip-Offs according to Matt Zinczenko of Men’s Health Magazine and explosive book series, Eat This-Not That.

Compared to gluten-filled counterparts, gluten-free versions are up to three times more in price and aren’t necessary healthier.  Some gluten-free cereals are higher in sugar and lower in nutrients.

So for the 1% of those who have to stay off gluten, how can you eat a healthy diet without sacrificing a week’s paycheck, especially in this recession?

Follow the 10 recommendations below to help you eat a gluten-free yet nutrient-filled diet and still have money in the bank.

1.   First, purchase gluten-free cookbooks designed for wallet friendly, nutrient filled receipes such as Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free for the Frugal and Lazy Cook.

2.   Make a shopping list of naturally healthy, unprocessed foods such as rice, potatoes, fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meats and low-fat dairy or non-dairy goods.

3.  Regulary cook at home to reveal, or challenge, your culinary art skill with your newly purchased items.

4.  But if you insist on purchasing the overly-priced box of sugar-laden cereal, make your box last longer by filing up the bowl halfway and fill the other half with fresh fruit, such as bananas.  As an added bonus, you receive more antioxidents and fiber.

5. Look for sales.  Sign up for your favorite gluten-free stores e-mail lists to receive their specials, then stock up.

6.  Find alternatives for bread, such as corn tortillas or large lettuce leaves.  Less calories, more filling.

7. Satisfy your sweet tooth with homemade fruit smoothies or fruit slices with nuts.

8. Keep healthy options, such as fruit and nuts to snack on when hunger strikes.

9.  Join support groups for tips and receipes, such as the http://glutendairy-free.blogspot.com/

10. Subscribe to the Scottsdale Examiner and National Gluten-Free Products Examiner for up-to-the-minute deals at local and nationwide stores and products.
